Heather Cook is a Graduate Level Intern. She holds three bachelor’s degrees—one in Human Development, one in Psychology, and one in Counseling—and is currently working on a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health at the University of North Texas. She believes in the importance of fostering a nonjudgmental environment that supports meaningful relationships and open communication. Her approach centers on the counseling relationship, where she empowers clients to explore their experiences and feelings in a safe, supportive space. Heather adopts a holistic view of the client, considering their emotional, mental, and physical well-being. She strives to cultivate genuineness and authenticity in her interactions, recognizing that these qualities are essential for both her own growth and that of her clients. Heather focuses on working with adolescents, effectively engaging younger clients through her training in play therapy. She also provides support to adults in her practice. Her specialties include trauma, self-esteem, inner-child work, anxiety, stress management, and navigating life transitions, allowing her to support clients in addressing their unique challenges. She thrives in interconnected settings, valuing inclusivity and ensuring everyone feels heard and appreciated.
Heather’s extensive travel has cultivated a deep sensitivity to diverse cultures. She has built a decade-long mentoring relationship as a Big Sister, providing friendship, emotional support, and guidance while serving as a positive role model. For the past eight years, Heather has worked with survivors of sexual assault at a local non-profit, where she made significant contributions as a Survivor Advocacy Team Member. Following that, she worked in a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) with adolescents for a year, further enhancing her skills in supporting young individuals facing a multitude of mental health challenges. Additionally, as a Research Assistant in a Cross-Cultural Attachment Research Lab, she participated in lab recruitment and research activities, presented research at conferences, and engaged in community service programs.
Committed to her physical and spiritual well-being, Heather maintains an energetic lifestyle, which, along with her organizational skills and attention to detail, enables her to manage a busy life effectively. She also enjoys creative problem-solving and seeks innovative solutions to challenges.
